Mixed media on Arches watercolor paper (collage, pastel, and ink)
Image size 7″ x 6″, Paper size 11″ x 10″

I used a combination of printed and painted papers, dry pastel, and India ink to create this colorful painting.  My technique, Chine Collé, uses thin paper pressed into a larger, thicker support paper (which I’ve earlier printed with ink.)  A thin adhesive layer between the pieces reinforces the bond as I run them through a printing press to unite them.  I add pastels and India ink for the final details.

Chine is the French word for China, referring to the fact that the thin paper originally used with this technique was imported from China.  Collé is the French word for “glued.”
